Combined Pill am I protected straight away?

My booklet said the same, i took it the first day my period started and didn't use any extra protection and i didn't get pregnant. You're protected straight away, if you start at other times of the month that's when you need to take it for longer, but the nurse told me that taking it whilst on your period would mean you are protected immediately, and as far as i can tell, i was :)
